WHO IS B.Y.E?
Black, Young, & Educated is a youth-led non-profit organization that aims to amplify Black voices through community and media. We were founded in 2019 through the work of high school students who felt underrepresented in their school systems. We were not being heard or given adequate resources and encouragement, so we made a space for that ourselves. Our first event was a Black Business Social, a network event for Black youth and professionals. We organized Civil Saturdays, a 16 week long protest calling for the amendment of PA section 508. Among other things we have done are Black Art shows, resource drives, open mic nights, Black Skate days and out Say B.Y.E to campaign.
We are led by two individuals, a First-gen Queer Black Nonbinary-man, Nick, and a First-gen Cis-hetero Black woman, Treasure. Treasure is a graduate of Oakland Catholic High School and Nick is a graduate of Central Catholic, a place both of them went to on scholarships from the Crossroads Foundation. Nick is currently enrolled in Temple University double majoring in Africology and African American studies and Media studies and Production. He uses the knowledge that he learns in both degrees and applies to work within the community, like Molefi Kete Asante’s Theory of Afrocentricity.
